The Benefit of Outdoor Wedding Portraits: Adriana+Raymond’s Cathedral Oaks Wedding

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Adriana+Ray’s wedding venue, Cathedral Oaks, offered oodles of beautiful places to take pictures -inside and out.  They opted for outdoor formal portraits with family and the bridal party between their ceremony and reception and their choice illustrates beautifully how to easily get great pictures with your loved ones.

If given the option, choose outdoors instead of indoors.  Why?  It’s all about lighting. I prefer to use available light. It’s faster, it’s easier and it’s generally more even.  Available light is surrounding light and, in an outdoor context, means sunlight.  Did you know that an overcast or partly cloudy day can actually give you some of the best light?  It can!  Though we shot these as dusk was falling, the even light and the beautiful wooded background created pictures that are definitely frame-worthy.  Often times indoor lighting has mixed tones (yellow light from above and blue outdoor light coming in from windows) that create lighting havoc, so I always suggest that if there is a beautiful outdoor location for pictures, take it outside.  You’ll be far happier with the pictures than if you keep it all indoors.

Formal portraits are a great opportunity for candid moments, too.  Here Adriana and her Grandmother share a little love :)

Bringing the kids in for their close ups :)

Are you having an outdoor or indoor ceremony?  Either way, consider taking the formal pictures outside.  If you’re having an indoor ceremony, there will be oodles of pictures of all the key people during the ceremony and prep, so even if you have a stunning church altar, think about taking the formal shots outside.  If you have a different venue for the reception and it has some beautiful outdoor areas, let’s take those formal shots at the reception instead!

Crunched for time or sunlight?  Consider doing all of your formal pictures before the ceremony.  Here’s a great post on First Looks (the bride and groom meeting before the ceremony for an intimate time of connecting and formal portraits) -you can follow your First Looks with all the other formal portraits with family and your bridal party.  It is SO nice to knock those out of the way so that once you say “I DO” you can move right into enjoying the party with your guests and let everything flow!

Let’s talk about your wedding day itinerary and ensure you get creative, gorgeous photos for your formal portraits!

Why You Should Do First Looks: Liana+Terry’s Schwertner Ranch Wedding

110430 LianaTerry wed sm1 6

First Looks are so hot right now.  The couple meets before the ceremony for an intimate time of connecting and picture taking.  You may think, “Oh, I’d never do that!  I want him to see me for the first time when I walk down the aisle; I want to see his reaction and be presented to everyone for the first time in all my bridal glow at once.”  True, and that’s how I’d initially feel about it, too.  BUT, First Looks provides 2 things you usually can’t get when you stick with the traditional presentation.

1) Intimacy.  When you see Liana+Terry’s First Looks below, you’ll see how precious it can be for a couple to have a private meeting before hand, express their love, joy and excitement and truly be able to capture that “OH MY GOODNESS, YOU LOOK A-MAZING” reaction from your groom.  This, alone, is a fabulous reason to do a private First Looks.

2) Creative Photos.  Of all your wedding day photos, I firmly believe that these pictures of you as a couple are the ones you’ll put on your walls.  Unfortunately, there’s limited time between the ceremony and reception and often it’s these precious photos of the two of you that get the short end of the stick.  Traditionally, we’ll do family group shots, bridal party and then the couple, but if you’re trying to fit them all in before the reception, you’re only going to get a few short minutes for your shots together.  Doing them before the ceremony during first looks ensures you have great light (outdoor lighting is usually the best, hands down) and ample time to get creative and be relaxed.  PLUS , your hair and make up is fresh and perfect -you haven’s smeared anything (if you cry during the ceremony) and the wind hasn’t tussled your hair out of place (if you’re having an outdoor ceremony.)

Here are some getting ready shots and details of their wedding design and venue for you to enjoy and grab inspiration from!  You’re going to love their First Looks!

Gina Murrow - First Looks – what a great idea! So much better than the old adage of not seeing the bride before the ceremony.

Maybe when David and I celebrate our 50th anniversary with a ceremony, we’ll do First Look then!

I love how you captured the bride’s anticipation as her groom reached around his back to take her hand. Excellent!

Outdoor Cathedral Oaks Wedding: Four Tips for Great Ceremony Photos

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Adriana+Ray married at Cathedral Oaks Event Center in Belton, TX.  Their pre-ceremony shots (groomsmen playing poker, a relaxed bride with lots of details and shots of the beautiful reception ballroom) were fun, now we get into the heartwarming moments: their ceremony.  Scroll through their celebration, enjoy their touching union and I’ll share some top tips for great shots during your “I Do’s!”

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

This was something I don’t often see, but loved!  Ray stayed facing the minister until Adriana’s father presented her to him.  The anticipation builds while the groom hears the processional, the gasps from the guests as they see the bride in all her glory, the excitement when the father gives his daughter away -oh, it makes me have butterflies just thinking about it!  Great idea, even if you do first looks before hand (first looks: when the bride and groom meet before the wedding and do their pictures together before hustle and bustle of activity and guests. It’s very Now-Now.)

Top Tips for Great Ceremony Pictures

1) Altoids yes, gum no.  Have your coordinator or maid of honor do a check before the ceremony that parents, bridal party and you two lovebirds are sans gum.  The chewing faces are, hm, how shall I say… not very becoming.  Oust the gum.

2) Hold that kiss!  If you’d like shots of that kiss in the moment -not staged later- plant a big one right on your spouse’s kisser and make sure you hold it for a good 5 count.  That ensures time for both shooters to grab nice captures of that priceless moment.  Don’t rush -enjoy kissing your new Mr. or Mrs!

3) Guests, please take your seats.  Your guests are there to celebrate with you and they want to capture this special day for themselves but also to share with you.  Often times, though, they don’t realize that when they try to be paparazzi, it hurts the pictures your hired photographer is taking.  Write in your program and have your officiant announce before the ceremony to ask your guests to enjoy the ceremony from their seats and let the folks you hired to help memorialize your day do the running around.  They can snap from their seats, enjoy each moment and help keep your final pictures free of bogies.

4) Share the Plan.  Send me your ceremony program ahead of time along with how long each piece will take.  If I’m doing weekend coverage for you I’ll be able to watch the rehearsal, otherwise  a peek of the program is the next best thing so I can plan my shooting strategy and not miss a moment!  I love capturing everything as it happens instead of staging shots afterwards.

Let’s talk about your wedding plans!

Real Life Behind the Lens: Playtime With My Kids

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Have you met my little people?  Wilder Scott (4) & Waverley Jane (turning 2 this week.)  At our home we’re not into matching, we’re not into spick and span -you know, we’re more into “let’s enjoy our playtime and who gives a fig if we have chocolate all over our faces (snack for later?) and our shoes are on the wrong feet (shoes are overrated.)”  On my day off I got to have some wonderful playtime with my babies and wanted to share a few snaps of them in action.  Here are my tiny goofnuts enjoying our field of sprouting wildflowers.  Real life and, in my opinion, real cuteness. :)  I hope you and yours had a wonderful weekend!
